CBD VS THC

CBD is the buzz word in the health and wellness industry today and practitioners of alternative forms of medicine swear by it. CBD, undoubtedly offers a host of benefits but many people are still hesitant to include it into their day to day. There are two primarily reasons for this apprehension

1: Whether CBD is legal

2: Whether the use of CBD is as bad as getting addicted to THC

We'll address these concerns with a break down of the chemical composition, effects, benefits and uses of CBD vs. THC.

The chemical composition of THC vs CBD

Both THC (meaning 'tetrahydrocannabinol' which is responsible for the high that weed gives) and CBD belong to a family of 113 bi-cyclic and tri-cyclic cannabinoid compounds that occur naturally in cannabis. THC and CBD share the same molecular formula and have nearly the same molecular mass. However, it is the presence of a hydroxyl group in CBD that differentiates it from THC in terms of action and use.

Difference in extraction procedure

Both THC and CBD are extracted from the cannabis plant but their extraction process greatly differs.

THC is extracted from the leaves, flowers and stalks of the cannabis plant and added to edibles and wellness products. Others directly smoke a mixture of the dried cannabis flowers to enjoy its psychotropic properties.

On the other hand, CBD is extracted by steeping CBD-rich hemp flowers in high proof grain alcohol. This extract is then cooked for several hours over low heat to produce the final product which is then processed to make CBD tinctures, CBD oils, CBD edibles, CBD lotions and more.

Difference in effects of THC and CBD

While THC and CBD are essentially derived from the same plant species, the way these interact with the CB1 receptors of the brain dictate the difference in their action and medicinal benefits.

CBD

THC is a potent partial agonist of CB1 as it stimulates the CB1 receptors in the brain. This is what is responsible for the psychotropic effects of THC.

CBD on the other hand is the negative allosteric modulator of the CB1 receptors. As such, it not only alters the shape of the CB1 receptors, but prevents it form binding, thus keeping the psychotropic effects at bay.

Legal status of CBD vs THC

THC is federally illegal. However, many states do allow the use of THC rich medical marijuana for medicinal purposes.

CBD, however, was legalized with the 2018 Farm Bill, although some states still bar its use. It is important to note that selling CBD products under the guise of wellness products is not allowed and considered illegal.

As such, before using CBD or THC, it is best to check one’s state laws first.

Popularly available forms of THC and CBD concentrates

THC concentrates are popularly sold as butane honey oil, live resin, budder and taffy.

CBD concentrates are available on online CBD marketplaces and come in the form of CBD tinctures, oils, edibles, beverages and more. Several CBD infused products like transdermal patches, CBD gels and CBD lotions are also available on popular online CBD marketplaces.

CBD is gaining widespread popularity in the health and wellness sector because of the long list of clinical uses of the product. Along with scientific research there are ample anecdotal references that testify for the health benefits of CBD. THC, too has several health benefits provided the dosage is carefully regulated but it is the psychotropic properties of THC that makes it infamous and clubs it in the list of illegal drugs. Therefore, people looking to get some relief from anxiety, pain, stress and other such physical and mental conditions might as well opt for CBD concentrates and CBD infused products. CBD is not only legally permitted for use, it is also a very potent drug that acts fast and has long term health benefits.
